eCabs Technologies developed its product in Malta before exporting it to other cities around the world. What are the benefits of using Malta as a test-case for companies looking to develop innovative tech?

Malta offers one of the most demanding environments in Europe for mobility operations and the technology that supports them. The islands combine notably high road-network density with streets that range from pre-automobile layouts dating back to the early 1900s to modern arterial roads. This blend of old and new infrastructure creates the ideal sandbox for replicating almost any traffic condition found across the globe.

Malta also experiences pronounced seasonal shocks driven by the more than 4 million tourists who visit the islands, mostly in summer – around seven times the national population. These sudden surges in rider demand and driver supply place significant strain on the system, giving us a real-time laboratory to build predictive tools and operational workflows that can absorb extreme fluctuations. These are the same dynamics faced by major operators in large, volatile urban markets.

At the same time, Malta is one of the few small jurisdictions where global ride-hailing giants such as Uber and Bolt operate at scale. Competing in this environment pushed us to build tools and processes that match the sophistication of the largest digital-native platforms.

Mobility remains a hot topic in Malta, with traffic and ideas for a mass-transport solution regularly making headlines. How bad is traffic in Malta, and how can companies looking to establish a base here mitigate its impact?

Traffic in Malta is undeniably challenging. A combination of limited landmass, rapid urbanisation and a complex road network creates disproportionate congestion even with modest increases in vehicles or temporary roadworks.

Having worked hands-on in the transport sector for nearly two decades, I’ve seen how this affects productivity, travel times and quality of life. But companies can mitigate the impact: flexible working arrangements, data-informed scheduling and encouraging the use of alternative mobility options all help. With the right planning, Malta’s congestion becomes manageable rather than restrictive.

Long-term progress, however, will require sustained political consensus, since major improvements in mobility infrastructure depend on continuity of planning and policy across administrations. Encouragingly, the national conversation has matured, and there is growing recognition that only a unified approach can deliver lasting results.

In your journey from disruptive ride-hailing startup to tech exporter, how would you describe the support you found from the Maltese Government and related entities?

We have benefitted from strong support across the national ecosystem. The Malta Development Bank, for example, played a pivotal role in our latest phase of growth by backing investment in our upgraded tech stack. This support enabled us to shift from a predominantly local operator to a credible international technology provider.

There is always room to accelerate pathways for Maltese innovators to expand abroad, but the intent is clear. We have seen genuine willingness to support companies with global ambitions, and that backing has helped shape our evolution from operator to tech exporter.
