UK and US film and television productions currently account for between 70 per cent and 75 per cent of Malta’s inward spend within the audiovisual sector.
The figures were highlighted as Malta continues to expand its production infrastructure and position itself as a competitive filming destination within the Mediterranean region, supported by tax incentives and ongoing investment in studio facilities.
According to Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech, the majority of foreign expenditure generated through film production on the island originates from the UK and US markets. This inward spend includes local hiring, accommodation, logistics, set construction, technical services and wider supply-chain activity linked to major productions.
Over recent years, Malta has hosted a number of high-profile international productions, including Gladiator II, Napoleon, and Jurassic World Rebirth.
Since 2018, the Malta Film Commission says that around 200 productions have filmed on the island, generating an estimated €730 million in expenditure and supporting approximately 1,800 full-time jobs within the local industry.
Malta’s incentive framework, including a cash rebate of up to 40 per cent on eligible Maltese expenditure, remains central to attracting foreign productions. Officials argue that the scheme delivers a multiplier effect for the wider economy by stimulating spending across hospitality, construction, transport and professional services.
The upcoming development of new infrastructure at Malta Film Studios, including the proposed land–sea super stage, is expected to further strengthen Malta’s ability to attract complex, large-scale productions that require specialised technical environments.
Moreover, Malta is set to issue an international tender in the coming weeks for the construction of a new ‘land–sea super stage’ at Malta Film Studios in Kalkara.
