Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abela has described the launch of Delta Air Lines’ first direct service between New York and Malta as a significant step in strengthening the country's international connectivity and expanding economic opportunities with the United States.
Speaking during a press conference marking the arrival of the inaugural flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, Dr Abela said the new route reflects growing international confidence in Malta and its future prospects.
The event was attended by Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela, Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg, and representatives from Delta Air Lines.
The Prime Minister noted that the direct service, which will operate three times weekly, is expected to attract not only tourists but also investors and families travelling between the two countries.
“Malta now has a greater opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation with the United States,” Dr Abela said, highlighting the strategic importance of enhanced air links between the two markets.
He also pointed to what he described as strong momentum within Malta’s tourism sector and the continued investment taking place at Malta International Airport. Referring to recent passenger traffic figures, Dr Abela noted that more than one million passengers travelled through the airport during the spring months for the first time.
The Prime Minister said the new connection complements the Malta Tourism Authority’s strategy of positioning Malta as a destination capable of meeting a wide range of visitor expectations while attracting higher-value tourism.
He added that he looks forward to further collaboration that enables tourism to generate greater added value for the Maltese economy while supporting broader economic growth.
The Prime Minister also referenced recent economic indicators, noting that Eurostat data showed Malta recorded the highest economic growth rate in the European Union during the first quarter of the year. He further highlighted that S&P Global Ratings recently reaffirmed Malta’s credit rating and maintained a stable outlook for the country’s economy.
The launch of the Delta Air Lines service marks the first direct connection between New York and Malta operated by a US carrier in recent years and is expected to further strengthen business, tourism, and investment links between Malta and North America.
