Malta has been officially selected by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) to host one of Europe’s 13 newly established AI Factory Antennas, marking another significant step in the country’s digital transformation journey and strengthening its role within Europe’s artificial intelligence and high-performance computing network.
Malta’s Antenna, named CALYPSO (Computational AI factory Link Yielding Performance, Services, and Outreach), will be led by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) and linked to Greece’s PHAROS AI Factory.
It will provide Maltese startups, SMEs, researchers, and public bodies with access to EuroHPC AI supercomputing, algorithmic support, training, and datasets in key sectors such as finance, transport, and health, fostering AI development, compliance, and collaboration across Europe.
In addition, the AI Factory Antennas may also provide smaller-scale AI computing resources to support the fine-tuning, testing, and validation of AI applications.
The selection of Malta as an AI Factory Antenna comes as part of the wider EuroHPC AI Factories initiative, launched to accelerate Europe’s leadership in AI and make AI-optimised supercomputing resources more accessible across Member States.
Other AI Factory Antennas will be established in Cyprus, Moldova, Macedonia, Iceland, the UK and other countries.
The European Union will fund the AI Factory Antennas with an investment of around €55 million, matched by contributions from participating countries. Each Antenna will work closely with its linked AI Factory to provide national ecosystems with access to cutting-edge computing power for research, innovation, and industrial applications.
Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri welcomed this achievement, stating that “This is a proud moment for Malta. Through CALYPSO, our country will be directly connected to Europe’s most advanced AI and supercomputing capabilities, creating new opportunities for our innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to test, train, and deploy AI solutions with global potential. This achievement reinforces Malta’s position as a hub for digital excellence and innovation.”
The CEO of the MDIA, Kenneth Brincat, said, “We are proud that, through the acquisition of European funds, we will be creating the CALYPSO AI Factory Antenna with a value of €10 million. This project will strengthen our local ecosystem and provide direct access to advanced Artificial Intelligence resources, thereby reinforcing Malta’s position as a centre of innovation”.
