Malta’s Blue Lagoon is set for a major transformation that balances environmental restoration with high-quality visitor experiences, a project that reflects the island’s growing commitment to sustainable tourism and eco-conscious investment.
The Planning Application for the Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation has been officially submitted by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), Team Blue Lagoon and Mizzi Studio, signalling the next step toward revitalising one of Malta’s most iconic coastal destinations.
Mizzi Studio, led by architect Jonathan Mizzi, operates from offices in Valletta and London. The award-winning practice is recognised for its innovative, sustainability-driven designs, from the restoration of a traditional Maltese terraced house in Gwardamangia to the Carbon Garden Pavilion in London and the Green School project in Bali.
The initiative aims to restore ecological balance while creating a more accessible, environmentally responsible visitor experience at Comino’s celebrated Natura 2000 site. For investors and tourism operators, it represents Malta’s strategic shift toward long-term sustainability and high-value tourism experiences.
The rehabilitation plan includes several key upgrades designed to protect Comino’s fragile ecosystem while elevating the site’s appeal:
The Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation is a strategic investment in Malta’s tourism brand. The project sets a new benchmark for nature-led design and responsible tourism, strengthening the country’s positioning as a Mediterranean leader in sustainability-driven hospitality and eco-investment.
As Malta continues to attract global attention for its cultural heritage and coastal charm, the Blue Lagoon project demonstrates how thoughtful development can preserve natural assets while enhancing their economic and experiential value.
By prioritising sustainability and intelligent design, Malta is reinforcing its reputation as an island that invests in the future of its environment and people.
Mizzi Studio and Team Blue Lagoon will continue to share project updates and collaborate with NGOs, local stakeholders, and community representatives.
