Malta has cemented its status as a digital frontrunner, with telecoms provider GO plc announcing the completion of its nationwide fibre rollout – a transformative €100 million project that now brings ultra-fast internet to 371,000 homes across Malta and Gozo.
The milestone, described by GO CEO Nikhil Patil as a bold step towards building a “Digital Malta,” was announced at the company’s head office. It marks the successful culmination of a 13-year infrastructure effort, with over one million labour hours invested in laying 10,800 km of fibre-optic cables and over 3,200 km of ducts and tubing.
“This isn’t just a win for GO – it’s a win for every resident and business in Malta,” said Mr Patil. “We set out to future-proof the country with a robust, sustainable fibre network, and today, we can say we’ve achieved that vision.”
Malta is now among the first countries in Europe to achieve near-universal fibre access. The only exception is a small portion of Valletta, where heritage constraints prevent full installation. Yet even here, GO is working on solutions to close the final gaps.
With 94% of GO’s fixed-line customers already connected to fibre and gigabit internet speeds now within reach, the company is preparing to phase out copper entirely. Two new high-speed packages for residential and business users have been launched as part of GO’s ‘Fibre Island’ campaign, underlining its commitment to powering a smarter, more connected Malta.
Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri hailed the announcement as a defining moment for the country’s digital development. “This achievement sets the foundation for Malta’s continued evolution as a competitive, innovation-driven economy,” he said.
