S&P Global Ratings has reaffirmed Malta’s sovereign credit ratings at ‘A-/A-2’, maintaining a stable outlook and signalling continued confidence in the country’s economic and fiscal trajectory.
The latest assessment places Malta among a group of economies considered to have strong capacity to meet their financial commitments, despite a more uncertain global environment characterised by geopolitical tensions, slower economic growth and ongoing challenges across parts of Europe.
According to S&P, Malta’s economic outlook continues to be supported by resilient fundamentals and an improving fiscal position. The agency highlighted the country’s strengthened public finances, which it said provide greater flexibility to respond to external economic shocks and unexpected international developments.
The rating affirmation follows recent confirmation from the European Commission that Malta has met its fiscal targets earlier than anticipated, while forecasts point towards a continued narrowing of the deficit over the coming years.
For investors, the maintenance of Malta’s investment-grade rating offers further reassurance regarding the country’s macroeconomic stability and fiscal management at a time when some European jurisdictions have faced increased economic pressures and, in certain cases, rating downgrades.
The latest S&P assessment also complements recent positive evaluations from other major international rating agencies.
In May, Scope Ratings affirmed Malta’s A+ sovereign rating with a stable outlook, describing the country’s growth prospects as significantly stronger than those of many European peers. The agency cited robust domestic demand, a resilient labour market and strong performance in sectors such as tourism and services.
Morningstar DBRS has likewise maintained Malta’s A (high) sovereign rating with a stable outlook, pointing to the country’s economic performance and improving fiscal metrics as key strengths supporting its creditworthiness.
