The Labour Party has secured victory in Malta’s general election, clinching its fourth consecutive term in Government.
Labour entered the election as the clear frontrunner, with prediction platform Polymarket giving the party a 95% chance of retaining power ahead of polling day.
Prime Minister Robert Abela called the election a year early, stating that he wanted to ensure stability and continuity for the people of Malta in light of global challenges related to energy supply following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
PL put forward several promises during the campaign, including a €1,000 annual ‘super bonus’ for workers, extended maternity, paternity and parental leave, new special leave rights for parents, and a €5,000 birth bonus per child.
Other key promises include a reduction on SME corporate tax to 25 per cent, free Gozo Channel trips for passengers travelling without a car, an interconnector between Malta and Gozo, and a referendum on the legalisation of euthanasia.
In a first for a major Maltese political party, the PL also passed its promises through a wellbeing index, which found that the implementation of its manifesto would lead to a 25 per cent improvement in people’s quality of life.
