Maltese offshore waters have been described as an “exciting opportunity” for oil and gas exploration following a new agreement between the Government of Malta and geophysical data specialist Viridien SA.
The agreement will see Viridien invest in the development of an integrated multi-client dataset for Malta’s offshore area, aimed at significantly enhancing the quality and interpretation of existing seismic and well data through advanced imaging technologies.
Viridien said the project will improve the understanding of Malta’s petroleum potential in the Central Mediterranean and support a regional geological study focused on the petroleum systems and prospectivity of the country’s offshore acreage.
The resulting dataset is expected to serve as a foundation for future licensing activity and more informed exploration investment decisions.
Dechun Lin, Head of Earth Data at Viridien, said Malta’s “favourable geology and strategic location” present opportunities for exploration and production (E&P) companies seeking to tap emerging hydrocarbon potential in the Mediterranean, which he described as one of the world’s most active offshore exploration regions.
The initiative forms part of Viridien’s broader strategy to expand its Earth Data services in the Mediterranean through partnered, data-driven exploration projects.
Viridien highlighted its expertise in earth science, data science, sensing, imaging and monitoring, noting that its services are designed to support clients in gaining clearer subsurface insight in complex offshore environments.
The development has drawn attention locally, with political party Momentum calling for greater transparency from the government regarding offshore exploration plans. In a statement, the party urged authorities to be open about such agreements and stressed the importance of also exploring sustainable energy options, including Malta’s geothermal potential.
While the project is currently focused on data enhancement and geological understanding, it is expected to play a role in shaping any future offshore licensing or exploration activity in Maltese waters.
