Malta’s tourism education framework has received international recognition after the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) was awarded accreditation by the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism, Hospitality Education.
The accreditation follows a detailed institutional review and audit and positions ITS among a limited group of globally accredited tourism and hospitality education providers.
The international panel highlighted the Institute’s strong industry linkages, innovative programme structure spanning MQF Levels 2 to 7, and its alignment with Malta’s evolving tourism needs. Particular reference was made to the Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management as an example of specialised education supporting niche tourism sectors.
Auditors also noted the Institute’s use of blended learning methodologies and educational technology, as well as its international partnerships across Europe and China, which contribute to student mobility and global exposure.
ITS CEO Pierre Fenech said the recognition confirms the Institute’s role in supporting Malta’s skills base for the tourism sector.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg said the accreditation strengthens Malta’s reputation as a destination not only for tourism, but for high-quality tourism education and workforce preparation.
The report further commended ITS’s governance, student support structures, and graduate employability, noting that industry demand for ITS graduates significantly exceeds supply – an indicator of the Institute’s relevance to the tourism labour market.
With this accreditation, ITS reinforces Malta’s position as a hub for tourism education that supports both local industry needs and international standards.
