GO plc has announced the launch of Voice over WiiFi (VoWiFi), commonly known as Wi-Fi Calling, becoming the first operator in Malta to introduce this innovative service.
With Wi-Fi Calling, customers can make and receive voice calls using their phone’s native dialler on any Wi-Fi network in Malta.
The launch complements GO’s Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service, introduced in 2024.
The service ensures strong connectivity even in areas where mobile signal can be challenging to reach, such as deep indoors or basements, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available.
Importantly, no additional applications or fees are required, making the service both simple and accessible.
“Technology should make life simpler and more connected,” said Nikhil Patil, Chief Executive Officer at GO plc.
“With VoWiFi and VoLTE, we are removing the barriers that sometimes prevent a quick, clear conversation. This launch goes beyond network upgrades; it’s about ensuring everyone can reach who they need to, whenever they need to, with the devices they already own.”
VoWiFi seamlessly integrates into the customer experience. Once enabled on a compatible device, calls placed over Wi-Fi are billed as regular mobile calls and use the same native dialler interface.
Where devices support VoLTE, active calls can transition automatically between Wi-Fi and LTE, ensuring conversations remain uninterrupted as customers move between indoor and outdoor environments.
Kelvin Camenzuli, Chief Digital Officer at GO plc added: “Our network team has worked extremely hard to make VoWiFi a native part of the customer experience. We introduced this service because calls should be clear, seamless and dependable. By combining VoWiFi with VoLTE, we are delivering quality and reliability without adding cost or complexity for our customers.”
GO has ensured wide device readiness at launch. Apple iPhones from iPhone 7 onwards already support Wi-Fi Calling on GO’s network, with further support for popular Samsung and Google Pixel models rolling out as manufacturers release firmware updates. Customers are encouraged to keep their devices updated and to visit GO’s support pages for a full compatibility list and step-by-step guidance.
To use the service, customers simply need to enable Wi-Fi Calling in their phone settings and ensure their device software is up to date. At launch, VoWiFi is available for use within Malta, with roaming support under consideration for future phases.
