Such is the pace and cross-border nature of a lot of business today, that increasingly, startups, established companies and entrepreneurs can no longer afford to wait for lengthy banking processes to run their course. Increasingly, they expect responsive banking partners, direct access to decision-makers and, above all, a genuine commercial understanding of how their business operates.
These changing expectations are precisely where Lidion Bank has carved out its niche as a relationship-driven challenger bank. As Head of Commercial Business Development, Alina Ianculescu explains that her role is to identify, develop and convert opportunities that bring the right clients to the bank, while acting as the bridge between prospective businesses, existing clients and Lidion's internal teams.
“The days of purely transactional banking relationships are rapidly disappearing. Our goal is to be viewed as a business partner rather than simply a banking provider. That human and commercial approach is often what differentiates us from larger institutions,” Ms Ianculescu says. “We aim to help businesses become operational quickly and build long-term banking relationships that contribute to sustainable growth.”
Reflecting on her experience working with business owners across Europe, Ianculescu notes that clients are actively looking for banking partners who understand the realities of running a modern business. While agility and accessibility are highly valued, companies also want assurance that their bank has a deep understanding of regulatory frameworks and the complexities of operating across multiple jurisdictions.
“Companies themselves are becoming more sophisticated. They are increasingly focused on operational substance, regulatory certainty and access to banking partners that understand international business. All these factors play into their decision on where to establish a sound legal presence.”
It is precisely this level of scrutiny, she believes, that has continued to make Malta an attractive destination for internationally minded businesses. “Malta offers a rare combination of regulatory robustness, commercial accessibility and international connectivity,” she explains. “Many businesses recognise that Malta can offer a practical and credible gateway into the European market.”
That influx of interest has given Lidion the opportunity to develop deep expertise in the industries driving Malta's international growth, including fintech, payment services, digital businesses, gaming and international trade. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, the bank has deliberately invested in understanding the nuances of these fast-evolving sectors so it can better support the businesses operating within them.
This is a bank-wide effort. According to Ms Ianculescu, every opportunity undergoes a rigorous assessment covering regulatory status, governance, ownership, compliance framework, source of funds and overall risk profile. The Business Development team works closely with colleagues across Risk, Compliance and Client Relations, sharing knowledge to build a detailed understanding of complex industries, many of which continue to evolve alongside changing regulatory requirements.
This collaborative approach has also enabled Lidion to invest significantly in streamlining its onboarding and client enablement processes, while ensuring, as Ms Ianculescu notes, that “the right governance and controls remain firmly in place.” She adds: “Some sectors are certainly more complex than others, but complexity does not automatically equate to risk. We evaluate each business on its individual merits. This allows us to support innovative businesses responsibly and give them a chance to grow.”
This mindset begins from the very first conversation. Rather than immediately discussing products or services, Ms Ianculescu explains that the focus is first placed on getting to know the business itself. “We always start by understanding how the company generates revenue, its regulatory status, geographic footprint, expected transaction activity and its operational objectives,” she says. “Once we understand that, we can recommend the most suitable banking structure and begin guiding the client through the onboarding process.”
Importantly, that conversation doesn't end once an account application is submitted. By reducing friction between opening an account and actively using its services, Lidion enables businesses to become operational more quickly, which can make a significant difference for companies looking to establish themselves in Malta and begin trading without unnecessary delays.
Looking ahead, Ms Ianculescu believes the greatest opportunities lie in supporting internationally minded businesses that require more than traditional banking services. As companies become increasingly global in outlook, they are looking for banking partners that combine technical expertise with responsiveness and a genuine understanding of their commercial ambitions.
To support that vision, Lidion's strategy is centred around Financing and Cash Management, with technology continuing to play a central enabling role in supporting efficiency, resilience and client experience. The bank continues to invest in its products, systems and people, recognising that businesses increasingly need smarter ways to manage liquidity, access funding and operate seamlessly across borders.
For Ms Ianculescu, however, growth is measured by far more than numbers. “Growth for us is not simply about size,” she explains. “It's about creating long-term value for our clients by combining innovation with strong governance and a highly personalised approach. Our ambition is to be recognised as more than just a banking provider but as a trusted financial partner, one that helps clients grow faster, operate more efficiently and navigate an increasingly complex business landscape.”
